Without warning, a man sitting in his car at a traffic light goes blind. Then the man who helps him goes blind, then the doctor who examines him. A mysterious white blindness spreads through the city, and the government locks the first victims in an abandoned mental hospital. Only one person can still see — the doctor's wife.
Saramago's allegory shows how quickly civilization collapses, and what remains of humanity when it does.
