Somewhere in a small provincial town that could be called Kars, life goes on in its sleepy, absurd way — while the town's leaders, merchants, and patriots talk endlessly about the great and glorious Nairi, the mythical homeland of the Armenians. Then war and revolution arrive, and everyone's grand words are put to the test.
Charents's satirical novel takes aim at empty nationalist rhetoric with a sharp, modernist pen. Grotesque, funny, and deeply painful, "The Land of Nairi" asks what a homeland really is — a dream or the real people who live in it.
