The great Arab poet Abu-l-Ala al-Maarri, disgusted by the lies, greed, and cruelty of Baghdad, leaves the city with a caravan and heads into the desert, toward the sun, never to return.
Isahakyan's long poem is a hymn to the freedom of a soul that has rejected society. Its seventeen "suras" move from bitter disillusionment to an ecstatic union with nature and the infinite. One of the peaks of Armenian poetry, written with the grandeur of an Eastern legend.
