De l'esprit des lois
Montesquieu examines the laws of different nations and argues that they must suit the climate, customs, and character of each people. His most famous idea: liberty can only be preserved if legislative, executive, and judicial powers are separated.
This idea became the foundation of modern constitutional government, including the US Constitution.
