Du contrat social
"Man is born free, and everywhere he is in chains." Rousseau asks how a legitimate political order can exist. His answer: through a social contract in which people unite and submit to the "general will" of the community, which is their own will.
This short and radical book influenced the French Revolution and remains one of the foundations of modern democratic theory.
