In the twelfth century, when Armenia had no state of its own, the scholar and priest Mkhitar Gosh compiled a code of laws for the Armenian people, combining church canons, customary law, and moral teachings.
The first Armenian law book was used for centuries, not only in Armenia but also in Armenian communities abroad, and remains a remarkable monument of medieval legal thought.
