In the mountains of Lori, a shepherd named Saro and a village girl named Anush fall in love. But a wrestling match at a wedding — and a broken custom — turns her brother Mosi and Saro into mortal enemies, and the lovers are caught in a feud that pride will not let anyone end.
Tumanyan's narrative poem is the great Armenian love tragedy, filled with folk songs, mountain landscapes, and the music of village life. It later became the basis of Armen Tigranian's opera, and generations of Armenians know its lines by heart.
