Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, is part god and part man, and so powerful that his people beg the gods for relief. The gods create Enkidu, a wild man, to challenge him — and the two become inseparable friends. Together they slay monsters, but when Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh, terrified of death, sets out to find the secret of eternal life.
The oldest great work of literature known to us, written on clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia, it is still a moving story about friendship and mortality.
