"Mother died today. Or maybe yesterday, I don't know." Meursault, a young office worker in Algiers, feels no grief at his mother's funeral. A few days later, on a sunlit beach, he kills an Arab man almost without reason. At his trial, it seems that his indifference matters more to the court than the murder itself.
Camus's short novel is one of the key works of twentieth-century literature — a story about absurdity, freedom, and a man who refuses to lie about his feelings.
