Fourth-century Armenia stands between two empires. Byzantium and Persia both want the kingdom, and when the Persian king demands that Armenians abandon Christianity, some of the most powerful nobles are ready to agree. Among them is Prince Vahan Mamikonian — whose own son, Samvel, must decide between loyalty to his father and loyalty to his people.
Raffi builds an epic of betrayal, faith, and impossible choices on the pages of Armenia's ancient chronicles. Its young hero faces a tragedy worthy of the Greeks, and his decision has made "Samvel" one of the most beloved historical novels in Armenian literature.
