In a shabby Paris boarding house in 1819 live the old Goriot, who has given all his fortune to his two ungrateful daughters, and Eugène de Rastignac, a poor young man from the provinces who dreams of conquering Parisian high society. A mysterious lodger named Vautrin offers Eugène a dangerous shortcut to success.
Balzac's novel is one of the central works of his "Human Comedy" — a sharp portrait of a society where money decides everything, and of a father's tragic love.
