Madame Bovary
Emma, a doctor's wife in a provincial Normandy town, has grown up on romantic novels and dreams of passion, luxury, and Paris. Her real life — a kind but dull husband, a boring town — cannot compare. So she takes lovers, buys beautiful things on credit, and sinks deeper into debt and illusion.
Flaubert's novel, which led to an obscenity trial when it appeared, is famous for its perfect style and merciless realism. "Madame Bovary, c'est moi," Flaubert is said to have remarked.
