Magna Carta
In 1215, rebellious English barons forced King John to seal a charter limiting royal power and guaranteeing certain rights, including protection against unlawful imprisonment.
Though many of its clauses were soon annulled, the Magna Carta became a symbol of liberty and the rule of law.
