Die Verwandlung
As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect. His first worry is not his new body but the fact that he is late for work. His family, who depend on his salary, react first with horror, then with shame, and finally with something worse.
Kafka's novella is a nightmare told in a calm, precise voice — a story about alienation, family, and what happens when a person is no longer useful. One of the most famous opening lines in literature.
