Bēowulf
The hero Beowulf crosses the sea to help the Danish king Hrothgar, whose hall is attacked every night by the monster Grendel. He kills the monster, then its vengeful mother, and many years later, as an old king, faces a dragon.
The oldest surviving epic poem in English.
