Aeneis
After the fall of Troy, the Trojan prince Aeneas escapes the burning city with his father and son and sets out to find a new homeland. After shipwrecks, a tragic love affair with Queen Dido of Carthage, and a journey to the underworld, he reaches Italy, where his descendants will found Rome.
Virgil's epic was Rome's national poem.
