Midway through the journey of his life, Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood. Guided by the Roman poet Virgil, he descends through the nine circles of Hell, climbs the mountain of Purgatory, and finally, led by his beloved Beatrice, rises through the spheres of Paradise to the vision of God.
Dante's poem, written in Italian rather than Latin, is a summa of medieval thought and one of the greatest works of world literature.
