Who were the Armenians before they became Armenians? Commissioned by Prince Sahak Bagratuni, Movses Khorenatsi sets out to tell the whole story — from the legendary archer Hayk, who defied the tyrant Bel and led his people to the land of Ararat, through kings, heroes, and dynasties, to the fall of the Arsacid throne in the fifth century.
Part history, part epic, part lament, the book preserves myths and songs that would otherwise have vanished, and ends with one of the most famous laments in Armenian literature, mourning a homeland without kings. Revered as the "Father of Armenian History," Khorenatsi gave a nation its memory — and an argument for why that memory matters.
