Die vierzig Tage des Musa Dagh
In 1915, the Armenian villagers of Musa Dagh, a mountain on the Mediterranean coast, refuse to obey Ottoman deportation orders. Led by Gabriel Bagradian, they climb the mountain and defend themselves for forty days against the Turkish army, until a French ship appears.
Werfel's novel, based on real events, was one of the first books to tell the world about the Armenian Genocide. Banned by the Nazis, it became a source of inspiration in the Jewish ghettos.
