Մատեան ողբերգութեան
Around the year 1000, in a monastery on the shores of Lake Van, a monk named Grigor sits down to write not a chronicle or a sermon, but a conversation with God "from the depths of the heart." The result is ninety-five prayers in which a single human voice confesses, accuses itself, despairs, and slowly climbs toward grace.
Narekatsi turns his own soul into a battlefield and speaks for everyone who has ever felt unworthy. Dense with startling images and the music of classical Armenian, the Book of Lamentations became more than literature: for a thousand years Armenians kept it at the bedside of the sick, believing its words could heal. A cornerstone of world mystical poetry, and still the beating heart of Armenian letters.
